The Green Leap: More promises but little innovation at COP30
The COP30 in November made some ambitious commitments to scaling up climate finance. Until those materialise, initiatives to leverage natural endowments for financing may be more attractive to African countries, especially those with high forest cover.
- The finance commitments made in Brazil were very ambitious: to scale up the collective climate finance goal to $1.3trn a year by 2035.
- More funding for adaptation will help Africa deal with the disruptions to activity caused by high-impact weather events.
- Initiatives that tie carbon absorption to financing are another interesting avenue, especially for the countries of the Congo River Basin.
