We explore how different demographic trajectories could shape future economic outcomes. We discuss why demographics are so important to the long run, identifying three key transmission channels. In our Secular Stagnation scenario, global fertility falls short of expectations, leaving the global population a billion smaller than our baseline by 2060. This reduces innovation and investment, weakening productivity. By contrast, the Tech Revolution scenario features a younger, larger workforce that drives stronger demand. This scenario also examines how technology could help offset labour shortages in advanced economies.

Benjamin Trevis

Benjamin Trevis is a Senior Economist on the Scenarios and Modelling team at Oxford Economics. His work contributes to a variety of consulting projects, analysing both short- and long-term macroeconomic risks. This research explores how factors such as geopolitics, climate change, technology, and demographics shape the global economic outlook, with particular attention to the risks associated with them.

Benjamin joined Oxford Economics’ London office in September 2023. He previously worked at the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) as an Economist, and holds a Masters degree in Economics from the University of Sheffield.

Daniel Moseley

Dan is a Lead Economist in the Macro Modelling and Scenarios team, based in London. Since joining Oxford Economics in 2018, Dan has worked on a range of consulting projects, regulatory stress tests, bespoke scenario analysis and econometric modelling projects. Dan is responsible for the publication of our long-run macroeconomic scenario projections, the Megatrends Scenarios service.

Marco Santaniello

Marco Santaniello is an Economist in the Scenarios and Macro Modelling Division at Oxford Economics, based in London. He contributes to the development of long-term global scenarios and bespoke client projects using the Global Economic Model, as well as supporting the running of subscription services such as the Global Scenario Service (GSS). Prior to joining Oxford Economics, Marco worked as a Ratings Associate in the Sovereign Risk team at Moody’s Ratings. He holds a master’s degree in Economics from the University of Oxford and a bachelor’s degree in Political Economy from King’s College London.
