Some market participants are raising concerns over a fall in demand for US Treasuries from Japanese investors amid higher domestic yields. But we think that there will continue to be a large and stable investor base in Japan for US Treasuries due to the still-large yield gap. Also, uncertainty over the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy is dissuading investors from increasing their holdings of Japanese government bonds.

Investment incentives are set to fall in the UK
• In April 2023, the Corporation Tax rate is set to increase from 19% to 25% at the same time as the end of the super-deduction regime.

The outlook for Latin America changed dramatically after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February.

The semiconductor cycle has already turned and is likely to continue softening into next year. As the world’s largest producer of chips, Asia is set to bear the brunt of the hit to growth.

It’s been a horrible period for EM portfolio debt flows. The better news is that broader capital flows to EMs have held up well and next year we expect a recovery in fixed income.

As Russia’s war in Ukraine enters a new phase, so does the economic crisis. Based on my conversations with locals and observations from a recent visit to Moscow, it appears the mobilisation of new troops announced in late September has dented consumer and business confidence and reduced demand for goods and services.

The government’s levelling up ambition has probably been made more, not less, difficult by the new “Plan for Growth”. Policies of lower taxes, less regulation, and a smaller state are unlikely to have much beneficial impact on long-term growth at the national level, let alone in those regions with long track records of underperformance.
