The Horn on Edge: Ethiopia’s Tigray crisis and rising tensions with Eritrea

5 November 2026 – 1.00pm SAST
online

The return of fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region has raised fears that the country could once again descend into a protracted internal conflict, with potentially far-reaching consequences for the wider Horn of Africa.

The breakdown of the fragile post-war settlement has coincided with a sharp deterioration in relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara, raising the prospect of a direct confrontation between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Beyond Tigray, competing strategic interests, shifting alliances and unresolved disputes over Red Sea access and Nile waters are deepening regional fault lines, drawing in neighbours including Somalia, Sudan and Egypt. With Ethiopia’s internal security challenges increasingly intertwined with regional rivalries, the risk of escalation extends well beyond its borders.

This webinar will examine the drivers behind the renewed conflict, the calculations shaping Ethiopia and Eritrea’s increasingly hostile relationship, and the interests of other regional actors. It will also assess potential pathways for escalation or de-escalation, the prospects for a durable political settlement in Tigray, and the implications for regional stability, trade and investment.

This webinar is being held on our new platform, ON24. If you do not receive your confirmation email, please check your junk and spam folders.
