  • New Download Dashboard Feature

New Download Dashboard Feature

Overview

We are excited to announce a major improvement to the way downloads are managed on the Global Data Workstation Databank platform. This change is significant in terms of how download files are processed, but will not affect your normal download experience. Hopefully, the only difference you will notice is a more reliable download service on our platform.

This new feature adds the option for you to queue up downloads, leave the website unattended and return at a later time to pick them up. Behind the scenes, download processing continues in your absence ensuring the downloaded files are ready and waiting in your dashboard the next time you log into the platform.

The downloads dashboard is in the My Account section of the data services platform, and is reached by clicking on your name in the top right hand corner of the website.

Downloads are stored for 30 days after which they will be deleted.

How it works

When you request a download a message is transmitted onto our enterprise-grade service bus. Requests are stored across a high availability set of 3 database servers guaranteeing that no messages will be lost even in the event of catastrophic failure on one of our servers. Your download requests are dealt with by a group of download agents. When processing is complete, messages are sent back to the Global Data Workstation website and a note and link is added to your personal downloads dashboard allowing you to retrieve the download file anon.

What's next?

We plan to augment the workflow with the ability to send you an email with a download link when your download is ready. Similarly, if you have downloads in your dashboard which have not been downloaded already, but are about to expire, we will send you a reminder email.
