The calm before the fiscal storm

Based on recently unveiled draft budgets, eurozone governments plan more fiscal tightening next year than after the financial crisis, although some of this will be offset by spending related to the EU’s Recovery Fund. As deficits narrow, the private sector – in particular strong consumer demand – is expected to become the main growth driver, in line with our baseline forecast.
