Despite the fourth wave of Covid-19 cases in November 2020, total construction work done pushed ahead and we now think activity contracted 4.2% in 2020. This was largely due to a ramp up in infrastructure projects, particularly over Q4 2020, as the government pushed public projects already in the pipeline in order to help facilitate the recovery. This saw civil engineering construction work done grow 9.8% for the year, placing a floor under the construction decline. Construction activity is expected to ramp up over 2021 (+5.8%) as the resumption of works on a backlog of approved residential and non-residential projects that were stalled or put on hold lead the recovery.
