Consumer spending has rebounded strongly since the initial Covid shock, but the recovery remains incomplete and is currently losing momentum, weighed down by the third infection wave's impact on discretionary spending. Looking ahead, the flaring health crisis will drag on consumer outlays in the near-term, but immunizations, business reopenings, and additional fiscal stimulus will allow spending to regain momentum later in 2021. Improving health conditions will unleash greater services spending, mainly by higher income tranches of the population.
