The construction sector is expected to remain in the downturn this year, instead of a modest turnaround that we forecast last December. Construction activity in terms of commencement value in 2020 is expected to decline by 2.9%, as disruptions caused by COVID-19 impacted negatively on both the economy and construction sector especially in H1 of the year. Civil engineering commencement activity is to expand by a modest 2.2% this year but building activity in the residential (-3.3%) and non-residential (-6.3%) sectors is likely to remain sluggish –weighed down by prevailing supply overhang across the property market and weakening demand amid economic uncertainties.
