Research Briefing | New Zealand: Impact of COVID-19 related construction lockdown

Building and construction activity will drop sharply over the near term as New Zealand announces an unprecedented Level 4 nationwide lockdown from midnight 25 March for the next four weeks in a bid to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. All non-essential businesses will be closed with construction services only allowed for those related to essential services, critical infrastructure, or those needed to maintain human health and safety.

Consequently, we have substantially revised our building and construction forecasts for 2020 and 2021, which we expect to be impacted by ongoing dislocation and supply chain disruption. Civil engineering will help to mitigate the sharp downturn in the building sector, with work done growth forecast to bounce back strongly in Q3 and Q4, on the back of an assumed fiscal support package which accelerates projects planned and currently underway.
