Getting old before getting rich

We find structural factors such as debt overhang, poor demographics, insufficient savings and long-term austerity will severely undermine Brazil’s growth potential well beyond the short term. Absent a surprising and unprecedented surge in productivity, Latin America’s largest economy will get old before it gets rich, making Brazil a strong candidate to remain stuck in the “middle-income trap.”
