The rise of China’s financial statecraft

After building a war chest of reserves over the past decade, China has evolved from the main purchaser of global safe assets to become the marginal lender—directly or indirectly—to riskier sovereigns. We believe this is creating an increasing debt burden in recipient countries, sometimes quite significantly, that could be problematic.
