Transitory inflation cuts both ways for the Fed

While some of the recent weakness in inflation is transitory, we find that the persistent shortfall relative to the Fed’s 2% target is structural. Continuing low inflation could force the Fed to cut rates sooner than anticipated, especially in the context of rising trade tensions, and well before it finishes the comprehensive review of its monetary policy framework.
