About the Economics Editor role
The Economics Editor sits in the consulting side of Oxford Economics, based in our London office. As the organisation continues to grow rapidly, the Editor’s role is to raise and maintain the quality of all aspects of our written communication and presentation. The Editor will take a proactive approach to improving the way we communicate, to give our analysis greater impact and resonance. The challenge of the role is to improve, distil and develop the insights of quantitative economic analysis into compelling and accurate written copy. In developing the narrative behind our reports, the Editor will use that process to challenge and quality-assure the underlying analysis, working with project managers to ensure that the final product is logically coherent, precise and engaging. The Editor is also responsible for ensuring a consistent and professional image of the team’s work by enforcing adherence to the style and branding guidelines.
The Economics Editor will work closely with seven team leaders across the Consulting and Cities & Regions divisions of Oxford Economics, comprising some 50 economists based in London, New York and Belfast. The division produces a large quantity of reports each year and the role of the Editor will be to take charge of the team’s written output, improving the standard of written communication directly as well as helping report authors to improve their drafting skills. While it is not necessary for the Editor to have a deep understanding of economics, she or he will be adept at editing analytical content to communicate the key messages, and challenge the underlying logic of the analysis, without misrepresenting the underlying economics. Key elements of the role include the following:
- Identifying the most important projects to focus on and taking charge of the editing process;
- Developing ways to raise the quality of report writing across the team;
- Helping colleagues to understand and appreciate the importance of tight and precise drafting;
- Writing, as well as stylistic and substantive editing, of consultancy reports and presentations, as well as occasionally proposals, website and other materials.
- Take responsibility for the external image of OE Consulting created by our work.
- Managing design and print processes with external agencies.
This exciting role would suit someone who is an excellent written communicator, and a rigorous and logical thinker. The successful candidate will also be someone who has the presence and ability to influence the culture of this growing team. It is not essential for the Editor to have a background as a professional economist. The Economics Editor should have the following attributes.
- At least eight years’ experience of research and report-writing, or economic journalism;
- Excellent written and verbal communication;
- Close attention to detail;
- An appreciation of economics and social science analysis more generally;
- Ability to develop an economically coherent narrative from quantitative data and explain economic concepts in plain English;
- Ability to prioritise work in order to focus on the most high profile or externally sensitive reports;
- Diplomatic but assertive approach with project managers to ensure the quality of their output;
- Resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries;
- A strong visual sense and awareness of the importance of design and presentation; and
- A commitment to going the extra mile to produce rigorous, accurate work, within the constraints of the time and resources available.
- Familiarity with Creative Cloud;
- Familiarity with Prezi;
- Experience of using quantitative data in research;
- Management experience; and
- Experience of working in a client-focused environment, such as consulting.
