Asian economies face rising risks

Over the last few weeks, Asian financial markets have been more volatile than usual. Part of this volatility has come as markets seem to have rethought their views on US interest rates and the Japanese economy. Market variables have retraced, but the questions still remain about the global economic outlook. We draw out the implications for Asia.

Arup Raha is the Head of APAC Economics at Oxford Economics. He leads a strong 10-member team with responsibility for the coverage of several Asian economies, including China, Japan and India. Arup started his career as an economist with the World Bank in Washington DC and then went on to build a successful career in the financial services industry. Arup has previously been the Chief Economist for Asia-Pacific for 3 global banks, namely UBS, Citi and HSBC and has also been the Head of India Equity Research for JP Morgan. Arup has a B.A. (Honors) in Economics from St Stephen’s College, Delhi, a M.A. in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, and a Ph.D in Economics from Vanderbilt University in the US.

Adam Ahmad Samdin is an Assistant Economist at Oxford Economics, where he is part of the Asia Macro team. He covers the economic developments and trends in Vietnam and Cambodia, while also supporting the team’s broader regional views. His work involves analyzing macroeconomic data, producing forecasts, and providing insightful commentary on the economic conditions of these countries.  

Before joining Oxford Economics, Adam worked as an Economist at Singapore’s Maritime & Port Authority. During his tenure there, he was responsible for conducting economic research and analysis related to the maritime and port sectors, contributing to policy formulation and strategic planning.  

Adam holds a Bachelor’s degree in Politics, Law, and Economics from Singapore Management University. His academic background, combined with his professional experience, equips him with a comprehensive understanding of economic principles and their practical applications in both the public and private sectors.  

In addition to his core responsibilities, Adam is passionate about staying updated with the latest economic trends and developments in Asia. He actively participates in economic forums and conferences to enhance his expertise, and network within the industry.
