We’re pleased to announce that a new and improved version of our Global Model Workstation desktop application (GMW) is now available to users of our Global Model. The upgrade includes some new features, performance improvements and bug fixes. Also, please note that we’ve dropped Data from the application name so it’s now Global Model Workstation instead of Global Model Data Workstation.
Read on for the FAQ and details of the new features.
Where can I find out more about the Global Model Workstation?
Please see the original FAQ here.
How do I get the new version?
The new version is included in the October 2014 release of the Global Model. To install the latest Global Model release with GMW, follow these steps:
- Download the Global Model Software Files from our website
- Unzip the downloaded file and run the EXE file therein
- After installing the Global Model, you will the see the screen below. Review and accept the license terms, then click Yes to install the new version of GMW
What will happen to my current version?
If you installed a previous version of GMW, the new version will be installed to the same location and will replace it. Your saved data (e.g. selections) will be preserved and available to you in the new version.
Do I have to install the new version to continue using GMW or the Global Model?
No, but we do recommend that you upgrade to take advantage of the latest features. If you choose to Skip on the screen shown above, the Global Model release will still be installed and you will keep your existing version of GMW (if any).
Why did the application name change?
The Global Model Workstation is the sister application of our online platform, the Global Data Workstation. The change of name makes it easier to distinguish between the two.
What if I encounter an error in the application ?
If an error occurs, you may be asked if you would like to send us an error report. If you proceed, you will see a draft email in your default email client (e.g. Microsoft Outlook). This email includes some useful information and attachments which will help us to diagnose the problem.
Please feel free to add to this email any further details about the error and what was happening in the application at the time it occurred. When you’re ready, send it to the pre-populated address.
If you are not asked to send an error report, please follow these steps:
- Take a screenshot of the error message
Email the screenshot to email@example.com with as much detail as you can provide about the error and what was happening in the application at the time it occurred
Where should I send my feedback or questions on the new version?
We welcome your comments and questions about the Global Model Workstation v2.0 at firstname.lastname@example.org.
New features in v2.0
New home page
There is no longer a separate Global Model Launcher application. Instead, the Start Menu and desktop shortcuts directly open the Global Model Workstation, the home page of which now allows you to:
- Launch the Global Model
- View and download data using GMW
- Launch the new Generate Results Tables application
Generate Results Tables application
This is a small application which acts as a new user interface for the existing section of the same name in the Global Model. It can be used to produce quick, readable outputs of commonly-selected groups of indicators. The new UI introduces some enhancements over the previous one such as:
- The ability to select tables and locations using trees
- The ability to save and load table selections
- A look and feel which is consistent with GMW and our online databanks
Saved selections in GMW can now be exported to and imported from files, allowing you to share your selections with other GMW users. For example, you can export a selection file to a shared network location so that your colleagues can import and use it. The Export and Import operations are available from the Open saved selections panel.
Enhanced charting capabilities
The new chart features that we released online recently are now available in GMW, where they can be used with your local Model databases. Enhancements include: multiple axes, forecast line, custom axis labels and the ability to download charts while offline.
